Fifteen-year-old Will Bennon has always looked after his twin brother who has Down syndrome, but now Will is ready to leave his family's ranch and become a professional cowboy, but Denny unexpectedly joins the journey.
Grades 6 and up.
Each year kids in Vermont, grades 4 to 8, are encouraged to read books from a list of 30 titles. In April, kids throughout Vermont vote on their favorite title, & the book that receives the most votes is the winner of the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award. Here follows the list for 2007/08. Read some or read them all. Post your thoughts here!

I just listened to the Recorded Books version of this fine book. It is really excellent, The narrator, Steven Boyer, was just right as Will. It really kept me on the edge of my seat, (car seat!).
This is one of my favorite DCF books so far this year. Will was a great character whose maturing was quite amazing.

thi is a sad, funny, gros book. you will love this book because it soows you how to brothers survive aout in the desert.Even though they have a lot of tough situatons they get though them all.
I thought this book was interesting when Will's brother, Denny, got bitten by a rattle snake and Will had to cut between his index finger and his thumb.
this book reminds me of what i did to my brothers this was a grate book
This book is very graphic. The book makes you feel sad, lonely, scared, and excited at the same time. I recommend this book for fourth graders (like me).
good book
i dont think this is the best book ever because it really is not the most interesting on earth but it is OK
i lovvved this book it was fine. It mad me happy and sad. I hjighly recomend it to people.
This book was over all not my favorite book i thought that it was much to hard to follow and had a lot to many hard words that i did not know
this book sucked. I hated it.
i did not like this book very much because it just skipped from one thing to the next like on minute they will be in the desert and the next they will be in the river. this book also never cought my intire book but it was ok i guess
yo mama why didn't you like this book.
houghht a small white scar was a pretty good book just the beginning was kind of boaring
This book was ok. It was boring in some parts but still had a lot of action. You could really feel the characters pain. But it still was ONLY ok because I think the best part in a book is not being boring and it was boring constanly.
