Grades 5 and up.
Each year kids in Vermont, grades 4 to 8, are encouraged to read books from a list of 30 titles. In April, kids throughout Vermont vote on their favorite title, & the book that receives the most votes is the winner of the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award. Here follows the list for 2007/08. Read some or read them all. Post your thoughts here!

This story reveals just how cruel children can be--or brutally honest, as the case might be. It is not cool to befriend someone who is different--and it takes a lot of courage to learn to understand life from the other point of view. This is well worth reading.
when i read fire girl i felt so bad for jessica, she didn't deserve to be talked about the way his so called friends did. jeff was so rude! i couldn't believe how rude he was being to jessica, it just shows how cruel my age group can be and that most kids aren't making up stories about being bullied.
When i read Firegirl i thought the kids in this book were rude also. The kids like Jeff were mean. They jugde Jessica because of what she looked like and never gave them a chance. I felt bad for Jessica also.
a1corvett says: this book showes how strong a friendship can be.
Chris A of Berlin says: This is a book about true friendship with a ordinary boy named Tom and a burned up girl named Jessica. I thought that the other people in the class would not talk to her because was burned up in the fire. I felt bad about Jessica because her only friend was Tom. Tom was the only one in the whole class to touch her. Tom was definetly a true friend to Jessica.
Maggie L. Lindsay B. of Berlin says:
We liked this book because Tom accepted everyone as an equal and a friend.
Tristan S of Berlin says that Firegirl is a very sad book because Tom was very good friends with Jessica and then she has to move back to Boston. It also is really sad because everyone looks at Jessica different except Tom.

this book really hit me when i read it. it made me rember when in Georgia how some people wouldn't talk to me cause i had glasses! so i can relate to Jessica a little bit. but i really loved this book! i would read it again if i really wanted to! i read this book in litercey, and i hope that next year that litercey class will read it again!(but they wont't) ;-)
Looks good, I'll read it
I agree with the other postings. Firebook was a good book. Jeff and the other people were really mean to Jessica.
I read Firegirl in class and I really
liked it. There once was a couple of girls who thought that I wasn't COOL
enough to hang out with them. I really like this book because I can relate it to my own life.
Firegirl was a sad book but was really good. It was cruel that people bullied Jessica just because she had been in a fire and wasn't like anyone else.I suggest that you read this book. I enjoyed it.
Firegirl is a is a really good book. When I started reading Firegirl I thought it was a girls book but its not and if and if you love books where you never know what happens then you will love this.
i loved this book and i suggest this book to people that read this. i feel bad for firegirl because all of the people in her class where talking about her behind her back. This book is my favorite book so far this year.
I think this is a grate book i reckimend it and think it will make people be inspierd and make a differnc on how theay ackt
Firegirl is a great book that can help you relize what your doing wrong or right and change what there doing to be a better person. I hope you have read fire girl or are thining about it:)
this book left and impression on me and showed me how people react when things that they are not used to get put into there enviroment.
I didn't like this book. I thought itwas boring and had no plot other than to have people pick on a girl who had been seriously burned.
it was a really good book
This is the perfect school group book. It is short and sweet. It really explains misfits and not fitting in.
I like book firegirl. It was sad when she died. People where mean to her.
this book was a little immature for the level it was put at. i did not enjoy this book one bit. i hope that tony abbott desides to write about something of a differnt gender next time!!
This book is very good. It shows that in schools people judge their peirs by their looks.
I thought firegirl was a awsome book. It really made me think how mean middle school students can be to each other
i did not like this book because they picked on Firegirl just because she was burned it's dumb.it was a deadly place to be in.I think the Abbott is a good Writter.
Heyy.....Firegirl was one of my favorite books. I thought that jessica's classmates were kind of cruel.....Everytime i read another chapter i wanted to keep reading and never wanted to put the book down..... :-)...I thought that this book was very similar to the book Stargirl...It sort of has the same story line just different. I really enjoyed the book firegirl and hope to hear more from Tony Abott.... :-)
I loved crosing the wire all I wanted to do was read on and it ceped me on the edge I would tottaly RECOMEND THIS BOOK
I haven't gotten to far into the book, but I am horrified about how Firegirl looks like! She has been in a accident, in a fire.
The boy that loves red cobras and becomes friends with Firegirl (Jessica)!
Firegirl was a boring book and i only read about70 pages of it before i returned it. But, It was a good plot.
When i read this book in class it reminded me of when i first moved to my new school there were 2 girls in my class that i wanted to hang out with. they didn't. it made me feel really bad.
When I read this book it was like being in the story with Tom, like being his best friend and he is telling me his story of who Jessica was and what happend between them.
Firegirl was a good book. It shows how far a friendship will go before it will breaks. I recomend this book to people who want to read about a girl and a boy and a secret friendship.
Firegirl was really awesome! I felt bad for Jessica but I'm glad that Tom learned not to judge people (example: Jessica) and to learn that other people (like Jeff) aren't always nice even if you have known them a long time and they have cool stuff. I think that he learned an important lesson.
This book was O.K. - nothing more. The concept of this book was quite good, which hooked many people, however I do not believe the author fully developed the subject matter. The characters - and friendship could have been devoloped more.
I thought the book was sad because the girl isnt wanted by most of the people in the class only by one boy. This book is about a girl who gets in an acsident were the car gets on fire and shes traped inside. This story reminded me of how one of my friends was in a house and it caught on fire but thoughs kids didnt make it. Im glad that this girl did. This book shows how it doesnt matter what you look like on the out side its how you are on the inside.
I read this book over the summer of 2007. I liked it because Ithink it shows that you have to really get to know someone, if your going to say if they're nice or weird. I also think it shows you can even have freinds if your really weird. I also thought it would be hard to imagine what Jessica would look like. The last thing that it shows isif one bad thing happens to you it doesn't mean no one is never going to like you again. I think other people should read this book because it might show you what its like to be bullied.
I liked this books very much. the reasin I liked this book is because it doen't mater what you look like on the out side it just maters what you are in the inside. It proves that you should really get to now someone before you juge them on what they look like.
I loved fire girl since has true freind ship and shows how hard it is to fit in with the others,it shows much emotion.I would reccommend thi book to anyone who love freind ship
I loved this book it showed me that you shouldn't pick on someone because of what they look like.
I even did a book report on it.
