Frustrated at life with an autistic brother, twelve-year-old Catherine longs for a normal existence but her world is further complicated by a friendship with a young paraplegic.
Grades 5 and up.
Each year kids in Vermont, grades 4 to 8, are encouraged to read books from a list of 30 titles. In April, kids throughout Vermont vote on their favorite title, & the book that receives the most votes is the winner of the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award. Here follows the list for 2007/08. Read some or read them all. Post your thoughts here!

This is a really great book because any one with disabilities can do the same stuff as people with out disabbilities. This book also tells us that it douse'nt mader what kind of friends you have, it only maders that they care about you.

Rules is a great book because when Catherine joged with Jason it was very sweet.
I think Rules is a really good book because Catherine knows everything about the people in the story, and I like the way that she describes them. And I like her rules. I like the cover. I think it is really like the story a lot. I’d recommend this book to anyone who has a little brother or sister.
rules is one of my favorite books.its about a 12year old girl that has a little brother with autism. it is a wonderful book
Rules show that even if a person has a disability their still a person with feelings and shouldn't be neglected or teased. Normal doesn't always mean perfect.
Hello!!!!!!!!
We have not read this book yet, but we LOVE the cover, and based on these comments we deffinatley want to read this!!!
WOW. I loved this book so much. It tells the true story, not the made up one.
THIS WAS NOT SUCH A GREAT BOOK
RULES
Rules was a very interesting book I think, you know unusual but I really liked the way the author used so much detail like Catherine having light brown, dark brown and white Gini pigs. I think this book is for ages 9 and up because it kind of an adult like book with some bigger words. And its about a girl named Catherine and she has a brother with autism and will do anything to have a normal life, but since you can’t usually wake up with your most wanted wish she took up drawing as a hobby.
I realy liked this book and I don't know why!! There's just somthing about it! If you haven't read this book yet you've got to because it's great!!!!
This book is awesome! I don't know what else to say!
I Really Reccomend This Book!
THIS BOOK IS AWESOMWE
I think friends is a great book about friends and caring
I'm so happy to see this website -- and to see that so many young people are chiming in with their comments! I recently served as a panelist for the 2007 Children & Young Adult Bloggers Literature Awards and know how much work goes into a project like this one. Please know that teachers (like me!) appreciate your efforts immensely!
Oh...and I commented on RULES because it's one of my all-time favorites. I loved the voice and the humor and the heart. Great book!
I liked this book because it really showed Catherine and Jason's feelings. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After reading Rules, I was left with a feeling of compassion for students in my classroom with special needs. I chastized myself for not having the patience or understanding that this sister has. Okay, granted we can all lose our cool sometimes. She seems to get the bigger picture. I appreciate this book for opening up my heart and mind.
Rules was graet, but it started out kind of slow, once i got into it it was great!!!!!
I liked this book because it tells a diferent side of a grils life. most books you read aren't about the autistic kids sister, or stuff like that. This book was a good change.
I did love this book about a autistic kid and a caring friendly sister. I enjoyed reading this lovely novel and schoolteachers should read this to their pupils.
I have read this book like 10 times. I really love this book because I can relate it to my life in a way. I am not 12 like Catherine I am 11 though I do have a brother that is such a goof ball. I think he needs a book of rules before he does something really goofy. This is one of my favorite books and I think that anyone that has no t read better read it soon because they have no idea what htey are missing.
Rules was awesome! It gave alot information about children with autisum. I hope all you readers read Rules.
Rules is a very good book. It tells the story of a 12 year old girl how's little brother has autisum. And her biggest wish is for him to wake and be a normal 8 year old little brother. This books make you see how hard it is for kids with disabilities. I finish the book in the car ride to volenteer for the speical olimpics. When I was there it made my think of the competiters very differently. GREAT BOOK
"Rules" was a great book. It really describes the feelings of someone who just wants something normal in their life. At the beginning it shows Caterine's greatest wish in life, and how she tries to make that possible. It also brings out parts of yourself as you read it.
In all, this book describes a example of a type of wish we all have: to be normal.
I really liked this book.I liked how Cynthia Lord described David it makes me feel like I am there trying to calm him down. I also like how she brings up another book.Frog And Toad and she lets David borrow words from toad.I think anyone who hasnt read the book should. it has alot of detail.
I thought rules was a very captivating book because it really went in detail about the struggles of having a sibling with special needs. It also went in depth about the peer presure of when you have a very good friend that might have something wrong with them or maybe they're uncool, versus a friend who is really popular and you have to try really hard to be their friend, and which person do you want to chose.
This is a great book if you love dramma and sadenss. i love it!!!!!
rules is a great book and my faveret dcf book.Because it made me lol because Dave was very funny.
This book looks good I think I wil read it.
this was a cool book. BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
I thought rules was an incredible book. But to me it didn't have enough - I don't know pazzaz - to be the dcf winner.
I had to read this book for my novel study and it acutchly wasn't bad. i really liked it. It really shows how a kid can feel being around diabled people.
I think that this book is very interesting and it could win if fire girl doesn't beat it, but it is such a discriptive book that really puts you in catherine's position!!
