Counting on Grace, by Elizabeth Winthrop

It's 1910 in Pownal, Vermont. At 12 Grace and her best friend Arthur must go to work in the mill, helping their mothers work the looms. Together Grace and Arthur write a secret letter to the Child Labor Board about underage children working in the mill. A few weeks later Lewis Hine, a famous reformer, arrives undercover to gather evidence.

This is an exceelent tale that gives the reader insight on the era of child labor. I met the author and she said that she got the idea for the book when she visited an old mill in Vermont. On the memorial stone at the mill, there was a picture of a girl working on one of the machines when the mill was still operating. This picture moved the author, and she wanted to find out more about this girl. So she investigated and then wrote this fictional story based on the real information she found.
This book gets a definite recommendation from me!

This book is an excellent mix of fiction and fact. As we follow Grace and Arthur, we understand just how difficult life was for children working in factories so far from their homes.

This book was good but I didn't like it. It was sad and a little to gross in some parts. I can see why that other kid had nightmares. I don't like this book at all.

we really liked this book. We enjoy history. At times we felt really bad for some of the characters. After we read this book we did a history project and alot of people would have done Grace if our teacher had let us. We thought it was interesting how she had gotten the idea to write this book. We enjoyed listening to the information about the real Grace.
